Flow Cytometry Facility

Cytometry Facility Resources

The IBSC Flow Cytometry Facility offers multicolor cell analysis by a BD FACS LSRII cell analyzer and single-cell sorting by a BD Biosciences FACS Aria cell sorter. We will work with you to design your experiment and develop your protocol. We encourage users to become self-operators if they expect to be doing regular FACS analysis, but we do offer fully assisted cell sorting and analysis by appointment. The facility is located on the 4th floor of the Biomedical Sciences Building. It is available for use by any interested researcher for stem cell research as well as other life sciences research. The cost to use the LSR or ARIA varies based on whether you are within or outside UCSC, and non-UCSC nonprofits receive a special rate.

This core facility is supported by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) and the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences (QB3).

New Users

If you are new to FACS and need help setting up an experimental protocol or design, please contact the IBSC facility manager. After you turn in the IBSC safety questionnaire, we will schedule a time with you to discuss your project. We recommend that researchers do an initial analysis experiment before trying to do a serious sort. This will allow for some familiarity with the BD DIVA software and give you a general feeling for cell numbers, concentrations, etc.

Biohazard Procedures (BSL2)

All users must have an approved BUA on file and must fill out the IBSC safety questionnaire before doing any project in the facility.

Policies

Users of the IBSC Flow Cytometry Facility are required to abide by all rules detailed in our policies.

Operator Support

Our normal staff hours are 7:00-3:30 pm.

We offer operator support, by appointment, for people who need to schedule their FACS time outside the normal staff hours. We cannot guarantee that every request can be accommodated, particularly on short notice. To request an operator appointment, please contact the IBSC facility manager. Include information about the instrument and times that would work for you, and include a good telephone contact number.
